Xerosis

Xerosis or Dry skin is extremely common, especially in older adults. It can occur at any age and for many reasons. Using a moisturizer often helps repair moderate cases of dry skin. Extremely dry skin can be hard to treat or mimic other skin conditions. It is very important to have a full examination by a Dermatologist to determine the exact cause of your dry skin, rule out other skin conditions and start proper treatment. Medical grade moisturizers usually are superior to over the counter brands, your doctor will help decide the best moisturizer and treatment for your dry skin.

Dry skin is more common during the cold winter months. Modifying your daily routine by taking shorter showers with lukewarm water and using moisturizers can help prevent the onset of xerosis cutis.

Below are a few tips to help prevent dry skin:

  • Avoid over cleansing or over scrubbing your skin

  • Shorten bath or shower times using excessively hot water

  • Use proper towel-drying pressures

  • Keep living areas humidified and warm

  • Use central heating in your home or workplace

  • Maintain proper hydration levels

  • Avoid extended sun exposure
