Injectable Fillers
What are Injectable Fillers?
Injectable fillers are gels made primarily of hyaluronic acid, a substance that naturally occurs in the skin. There are numerous brands of injectable fillers each with different properties and indications of use. Injectable fillers are administered to replace volume and fill areas of mild to moderate volume loss of the face that occur due to the natural process of aging and weight loss. Injectable fillers are FDA-approved to fill the lines of the face, around the mouth and nose, often referred to as "marionette lines" or "parentheses” as well as under eyes and lips. Other areas of the face can be treated off-label.
How are fillers administered?
Fillers are injected into the dermis of the skin using a precise, small bore needle. Upon initial consultation, Dr. Mays will work with you to help determine which areas of the face would respond best to treatment and which type of filler and how many syringes would be needed. A topical numbing cream is applied to the skin for several minutes before the procedure, and the injectable filler itself contains another numbing agent to make sure your treatment is comfortable.
How long does it take to see results? How long do results last?
Most people notice desired changes to the treated areas immediately. There may be some swelling which can last up to 72 hours but usually dissipates within 24 hours. Duration of results can vary from individual to individual and area to area, but improvements commonly last 6-12 months and decrease gradually over time.
